My original intent for becoming a volunteer of New York Cares was to occupy my time and gain some hands on experience as I wait to land a job. I have to be honest and admit that my motives were entirely self absorbed and selfish. After all volunteer work on a resume looks better than sitting at home watching movies, right? Sort of. Tonight I attended the volunteer orientation and I feel completely different. I am going into this with the desire to help people (more than the desire to help myself). The orientation really opened my eyes to the kind of work I would be doing. I am more excited about it now than I was before. Whether it’s to teach an adult education class, help animals, feed the homeless, or spend time with a lonely senior I just want to do something good for someone else. I want to do something positive. I know that showing up to any project will make a tremendous impact not just for my life, but more so for others.
